It was in connection with the casting of a concrete bridge over the railway in the summer of 2017 that the accident occurred. A scaffold collapsed and twelve people were injured, several of them seriously.
The injured were all employees of a Polish subcontractor to Skanska.
According to the Swedish Work Environment Agency’s investigation, the accident was caused by a design error in the formwork, which was built by a third company: Britek.
The preliminary investigation into work environment violations was closed after it was not possible to find anyone individually responsible who had breached to a punishable extent.
Skanska demanded compensation from Britek for the damage caused by the slide, but received its money from If Skadeförsäkring. Instead, the insurance company stepped in and demanded SEK 23 million in compensation from Britek.
The parties have now reached a settlement which means that Britek must pay ten million kroner to the insurance company. The smaller sum was in line with a limitation of the liability for damages that the parties had previously agreed upon.
