“Tells more than a single result”

Tells more than a single result

Wilma Murto gets to compete today in the Diamond League competition in a slightly different milieu. Murro and Jarno Koivunen’s goal for the rest of the season is to make the base level as strong as possible.

Fresh World Cup medalist Wilma Murto will be able to compete in a slightly different environment today, when the pre-discipline of the Zurich Diamond League women’s pole vault will be held in the evening at the city’s train station. The type of competition is closer to indoor jumping, as the competition is held inside the train station.

The jumping platform and the acceleration track are on top of the stage structure. Murto competed on similar platforms during the government period in France.

The platforms for the games are built by a German sports manager and pole guru Marc Osenberg. Koivunen trusts that the platform is of top quality.

– The platform must be tight enough. It is important that it feels the same as it does on the field. If it’s done poorly, it will have a bounce effect. I believe that the platform here has been done well.

For years, pole vaulting competitions have been held where there are people. Murto competed in such an event in connection with the 2015 Kaleva Games at Seinäjoki’s old market. He was second in the race after finishing Minna Nikkanen after.

The public gets to experience pole vaulting in a completely different way.

– The speed and height feel completely different when you can watch from the side. It’s a completely different experience and a place to jump for an athlete, says Koivunen.

A tougher base level than before

In Zurich, Murto will meet the cream of the World Championship finals in Budapest. Included are, for example, the USA who shared the World Cup gold Katie Moon and Australia Nina Kennedy.

Murro’s performance at the pole position in Budapest looked really convincing before the height of 485. Crossing the height of 480 was one of the most spectacular jumps of Murro’s career.

– There is so much in the tooth hole that he wants to win all the girls, Koivunen states.

When it comes to breaking, we are talking about the most amazing record heights ever. It is currently the 485 manufactured in last year’s EC final.

Koivunen says that the record is aimed at the end of the season without forgetting the big picture.

– The frenzy is to get the average of the top five results as hard as possible. It has progressed tremendously from last season, but if there is a really good final season, the average of the top five could reach 480.

Currently it is 476.6. Murto has jumped 471 or more in five races this summer.

Wilma Murro’s ten best race results

485 (-22)
480 (-23) in the hall
480 (-23)

477 (-23)

The hardest possible basic level creates the basis for good success in value competitions. With the constantly improving basic level, even an Olympic victory is no longer about big things.

– The basic level tells more than a single result. However, the ultimate thrill is to win.

In addition to Zurich, Murto competes for the rest of the season in the weekend match against Sweden and in the Diamond League finals held in Eugene.

On Tuesday, Koivunen chatted at the dining table with both World Cup winners.

– Yes, girls still want to be the best. I believe that everyone still has enough hunger for competition for the rest of the season.
