A lot has happened in the former track and field athlete and Olympic medalist Ludmila Engquists60, life. After her elite sports career, she went completely underground and lived for many years in silence. But in the fall of 2024, she broke the silence and opened up about the illnesses, growing up and the darkness after the doping verdict – in connection with her book release.
2024 – an ominous year
In 2024, Ludmila Engquist told that she divorced the husband with whom she had lived for 35 years. She told me that her cancer has come back and now it has spread, that her daughter has also been affected by cancer, and that she cannot afford to stay in her and her ex-husband’s house, which she is being forced to sell.
Now she also talks unfiltered about the sadness over the relationship with the children and her mental state.

Last fall, Ludmila Engquist released the autobiography “Ludmila – Swedes can’t be anyone” Jessica Gow / TT Tells about the son: “Carries a constant worry”
In an interview with Expressen, Ludmila Engquist says that the son Elias20, has been a great rescue in all the darkness.
She says that she has several times considered taking her own life, but the thought of her son has prevented her. Enquist goes on to talk about how her son is affected by her mood.
– He is diplomatic. But I know he’s tired of me not feeling well. And sorry for that. He is worried. Every time I leave, he asks if I’m okay. Then I answer yes. Then he says “Is it safe?”, she says in the interview.
Ludmila explains that her son is a constant worry and she “must act theatrics” in order not to be a burden or hurt her.

Sadness over the relationship with the daughter: “Damaged by growing up”
In addition to her son Elias, Engquist also has a daughter whom she had when she was 17. The daughter’s name is Natalya and she is 42 years old, and the relationship between them has long been complicated.
Engquist’s ex-husband, the daughter’s father, was an alcoholic, which Enquist explains that the daughter was damaged by while growing up, and for a time she lived with her grandmother and grandfather.
Engquist cannot forgive herself for being absent during her daughter’s upbringing and tells how it has affected her daughter.
– She is not feeling well. Then she compares it to my son, who I had when I was 40. Of course, there is jealousy there. Our contact is not as close as I would like. And there I also put a lot of blame on myself. I have tried in every way, she says The Express.
– But I also have thoughts there. Every day. How should I have done, why did it turn out the way it did?
Recently, daughter Natalya, like her mother, received the news that she suffered from cancer – something Engquist previously said has brought them closer together.
– I know we love each other. Both from my side and hers, we showed love to each other. We called each other “darlings”, “my best mother” and everything, she said when she visited Carina Bergfeldt in SVTearlier this year.
