How did Finnish NHL players’ autumn go compared to previous NHL autumns?

The so-called advanced statistics about the overall picture of playing have of course played a big role in hockey for years. However, we decided to list what the start of the season looks like for Finnish players when looking at traditional statistics, which are also sometimes called Teletext statistics.

We looked at, among other things, playing times, power points and save percentages.

The period under review was from the beginning of the NHL season (October 7, 2022) to the end of the year (December 31, 2022). By the end of the year, the teams had played 34–40 matches, while the regular season lasts 82 matches per team.

For comparison, the same statistics were made for previous seasons starting from autumn 2016. The exception in the comparison is the 2020–21 season, which was shortened due to the corona virus, for which the entire regular season of 56 matches was calculated.

This is what the sharpest tip of the Finnish points exchange looks like

First, let’s look at the brightest Finnish stars in the power point statistics.

Alexander Barkov can be found in the top five Finns in the power points since autumn 2016. The 27-year-old Florida captain is the only one whose name can be found in the top five in the comparison period every autumn.

Patrick Laine was among the top five Finnish scorers for four seasons in a row from 2016 to 2019, but not anymore after that. Of course, Laine has suffered from injuries. For example, during the fall season of 2021, he played only ten matches.

Sebastian Aho has been on the list every time since autumn 2017.

Mikko Rantanen has been in the group five times, when the review period is seven seasons. In the fall of 2019, he was sixth on the list because he was sidelined for weeks due to a leg injury.

Mikael Granlund and Teuvo Teräväinen have been among the five best Finnish power players in three autumns. Roope Hintz and Joonas Donskoi can be found twice in the list. Jesse Puljujärvi your wedge on the list in autumn 2021.

In the fall of 2022, a defenseman, Dallas, was among the top five Finnish point guards in power points Miro Heiskanen, who scored 5+24=29 in 35 matches. The last time a defender was among the top five Finns in power points was in the fall of 2016, Rasmus Ristolainen (36 matches, 3+22=25).
