Supporters of the ousted president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, continue to protest against Dina Boluarte taking over the post. During just over a month, the unrest has so far cost at least 45 people their lives, including a police officer.

Unrest has occurred and is occurring in several places in the country and has also increased in recent days in the capital Lima.

The protests aim to get Boluarte to resign. Boluarte was vice president but took power in December after Castillo, also from the Marxist Free Peru party, was ousted. He was deposed after he tried to dissolve parliament and impose a state of emergency.

Boluarte has made it clear that she does not intend to listen to the protesters and has no plans to leave the presidency.

Village school teacher Pedro Castillo won the presidential election in April 2021 and was seen as a representative of the poor rural population and was seen as a break with the dominance of the capital.

The protests, unrest and attempts by the authorities to fight back against the demonstrators have been most violent outside the capital, including in Arequipa in the south. There, people have again tried to take over the airport. The protests have also been strong in Deaguadero and La Libertad.
