Teachers union reacts to bad SFI figures: Not surprising

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Now there are reactions from the teachers’ union after Nyheterna’s information that almost half of the students drop out of the SFI, Swedish for immigrants, education.

– It is serious, but not surprising given how underfunded SFI education has been and is. V get more qualified SFI teachers and those teachers need the conditions to really play a role for these students, says Johanna Jaara Åstrand, confederation chairperson of Sweden’s teachers.

Many without jobs after dropping out

Between 2015 and 2021, the percentage of SFI students who drop out of their course has increased from 36 to 45 percent according to statistics produced by TV4 Nyheterna. Why more people interrupt their studies has not been followed up, but many miss both jobs and studies after dropping out:

According to the Minister of Education Mats Persson (L), the solution is to set higher language requirements as a condition for receiving grants from the state – a proposal that is currently being worked on. But it will take time before the results show, says the minister.

“Municipalities must get tools”

– Since this is a very prioritized issue that more people should learn Swedish and that more people should get jobs, we will give the municipalities the tools they need.
