A teachers’ union has announced a two-day strike to protest the ruthless treatment of children during the protests in Iran. Over 20 children are said to have lost their lives during the protests.

The union is calling for a strike from Sunday to Monday in response to the regime’s violent treatment of the protesters, which according to Amnesty International has claimed the lives of at least 23 children.

“We know very well that the military and security forces and plainclothes (police) have committed violence at schools and educational centers,” writes the trade union Coordinated Council for Teachers’ Syndicate in a statement on Telegram.

“During this systematic repression, they have ruthlessly taken the lives of a number of students and children,” it continues.

The wave of protests erupted in mid-September after 22-year-old Mahsa Zhina Amini died in the custody of the morality police, accused of not wearing the mandatory veil correctly.

Young women, university students and schoolgirls have made up a large proportion of the many Iranians who have taken to the streets and removed their headscarves, chanted anti-government slogans and been confronted by security forces.

Furthermore, the union writes that a large number of teachers have been arrested without charge, that the union does not tolerate “these atrocities and tyranny”, that it supports the protests and condemns the killing.
