teachers announce relaunch of their strike two months after classes

The Chad Teachers’ Union (SET) resumed its strike on Friday March 15, after a General Assembly held the day before. The movement to denounce the authorities’ broken promises was suspended in January, after two months and consultations with Prime Minister Succès Masra. But the agreements were not followed up, according to the SET.

To symbolically mark the resumption of movement two months later, the SET decided to return five bags of cereals to the government. These were offered by the Prime Minister to ensure the government’s good faith in the agreements made with the union.

But salary agreementsbonuses and careers have not had any effect, according to the president of the union’s crisis committee Faustin Djimoudouel.

They made us promises in relation to our seven points of demands, and we found that, in terms of negotiation, when your partner commits, you will also have to listen to him. Common sense dictated that we could listen to our government which was committed. But, since the resumption of classes on January 8, 2024 until today, we have noted with regret that nothing is being done to ease the minds of teachers. The authorities do not really want to engage in frank dialogue with us. And we immediately understood the game, people are much more interested in political questions and not in educational questions. We preferred to throw away the chalk.
