Taxes 2023: why you might pay a little less this year

Taxes 2023 why you might pay a little less this

Tax season is on. The first tax declarations in paper format have already been sent, while they will be opened online on the site taxes.gouv.fr from this Thursday, April 13. And this year, it could reserve some good surprises for certain households. With a rise in consumer prices of 5.6% over one year, according to INSEE, some taxpayers should pay less tax, or pay as much as the previous year.

Higher tax brackets

Faced with inflation, the scale of tax brackets for the year 2023 has been automatically raised by 5.4%, indicates the site of the Ministry of Economy. In other words, among the five slices which today divide tax rates according to income, namely 0%, 11%, 30%, 41% and 45%, each has seen its thresholds increased by 5.4%. If this revaluation is synonymous with lowering, or stagnating taxes for many, it will however have no effect for all. This is the case of those whose incomes increase at the same rate as prices. To benefit from this revaluation of the tranches, it is therefore necessary to have had a salary increase of less than 5.4%.

In addition, if the income of a 2022 tax household has not increased compared to that of 2021, then it will pay less tax. For example, a single person with the Smic will benefit from this revaluation of the scale, which will allow him to remain tax-free, whereas without revaluation, he would have had to pay 190 euros in taxes.

The scale of mileage charges noted

The Minister Delegate for Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, announced it on March 22. It’s done. The government has increased the mileage allowance scale by 5.4% as part of the 2023 tax return. The scale had already been raised by 10% in January 2022 to compensate for soaring fuel prices. This exceptional boost is supposed to target employees who choose to deduct their actual travel expenses from their taxable income. Something to compensate for inflation a little.

The new revaluation which now relates to the income of 2022 “can represent more than 100 euros for a single person who earns 2,900 euros”, Bercy had specified to AFP following the declarations of Gabriel Attal.

This scale is calculated according to the power of the vehicle and the distance travelled. Knowing that a specific scale is also provided for two wheels. And whatever the distance travelled, the amount of the costs incurred must be justified by fuel bills or toll tickets.
