TAX DATE. The first deadline not to be exceeded is set for May 22, 2023. Who is concerned? What rule for the online declaration? And paper? We take stock.
[Mis à jour le 20 avril 2023 à 06h55] Like every year with the arrival of spring, the time has come to complete your tax return. An obligation that meets certain rules, and in particular that of the deadline. Deadlines must be respected, under penalty of financial penalties. Indeed, if you return your declaration late to the tax authorities, you expose yourself to an increase of +10% in the absence of formal notice, and until +40% if you still have not resolved the situation after receiving a formal notice from the tax authorities.
Worse, if the tax authorities discover that you are carrying out an illicit or undeclared activity, a 80% increase will be automatically applied, without formal notice. Finally, late payment interest is also applied, up to 0.20% tax due per month late (2.4% over one year). In other words, find out about the deadline applied in your department of residence, and corresponding to the declaration method you have chosen this year (declaration in paper or online format). To see more clearly, here is the calendar to keep in mind:
- April 13, 2023 : beginning of the online reporting period
- May 22, 2023 : deadline for the paper declaration
- From May 25 to June 8, 2023 : deadlines for online declaration according to your department
What is the schedule for the 2023 tax deadlines?
Between April 6 and April 25, 2023 | Sending pre-filled declarations |
April 13, 2023 | Start of the online declaration |
May 22, 2023 | Paper declaration deadline |
May 25, 2023 | Deadline for online declaration for departments 01 to 19 |

This year, the tax return must be done online. However, there are certain exceptions and some taxpayers can still complete the paper form, if they do not have Internet access or if they do not have the capacity to use digital tools can still use the paper form. In this case, the paper tax return can be done until 22 May 2023 midnight, as evidenced by the postmark, regardless of their place of residence. The deadline is therefore the same for everyone.
Like every year, the arrival of spring rhymes with tax declaration. And despite the establishment of withholding tax four years ago now, you won’t escape it. Indeed, you will have to complete your tax return again, or check the information pre-filled by the tax authorities in your automatic declaration. The sending of pre-filled declarations will extend from April 6 to 25, 2023. The opening of the online declaration service will open its doors on April 13, 2023. The deadline for taxes online on impots.gouv.fr depends exclusively on your department number. We advise you to pay close attention to the deadlines after which it will no longer be possible to declare your income. An oversight that could cost you dearly with a financial penalty. In total, three zones have been determined by the tax authorities. Here are the deadlines for 2023:
- 1time area: the 25 May 2023 @ 11:59pm for departments n° 01 to 19 and residents not resident in France
- 2th area: the June 1st 2023 at 11:59 p.m. for departments 20 to 54 including the two departments of Corsica
- 3th area: the June 8, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. for departments n° 55 to 974/976
To declare online, you must connect to your private space with your tax number and your password. If you do not yet have a password, enter your tax number, your online access number and your reference tax income. You will find these identifiers on the tax return received in April (tax number and online access number) and on the tax notice received in August N-1 (reference tax income). If you have forgotten your tax number or your password, on the authentication screen, the procedures allow you to recover your identifiers.
Once authenticated, select the “Declare my income” service. Your online declaration will be pre-filled with information known to the administration. All you have to do is verify your marital status, your address and the pre-filled amounts. You can correct them if necessary. Then, you will complete the other income you have received and the charges, reductions or tax credits to which you are entitled. Don’t forget to sign your online declaration for it to be taken into account.
