Tarantino meets Rambo in what is probably the toughest war

The cute-sounding film title Sisu does not initially indicate the unbelievable brutality shown in the Finnish action film. Director Jalmari Helander leaves his hero with this slaughtering the Nazis with such uncompromising violence that it is reminiscent of Tarantino’s Ingloriuos Basterds. It goes without saying that logic sometimes gets lost in an action film, because the hero is a real stand-up man à la Rambo.

Sisu is above all entertaining and was a surprise hit from the cold north. No wonder it was sold out quickly after it was released for home cinema, but now it’s available again on Amazon.

Jalmari Helander is filming with an international megastar

Finland is not exactly known as a film nation; a successful production rarely comes to us. But Sisu has managed to inspire a wide audience and critics. Director Jalmari Helander was able to land Big Game in cinemas here in 2014 had a real megastar in the lead role with Samuel L. Jackson. However, the action film was largely shot in Bavaria, unmistakably in the Alps, which actually have no place in flat Finland. It’s all the better that Helander decided this time to actually shoot his film set in Finland there. The wasteland of Lapland fits perfectly with the harsh atmosphere and the barren protagonist.

Nothing can stop gold prospector Korpi.

That’s what Sisu is about

Finland, 1944: The Nazis are retreating towards Norway. They meet the lonely gold prospector Korpi (Jorma Tomilla), who has just found a good chunk of gold. The soldiers see the man as an easy victim from whom they can quickly steal his belongings, but they have no idea that they are dealing with an ice-cold killer who won’t let anything stop him on his quest for revenge.

By the way, the script for Sisu came about out of necessity, because Jalmari Halander actually wanted to shoot a sci-fi comedy in Canada, but due to the corona pandemic he had to stay in Finland and quickly wrote Sisu in autumn 2021. We’re excited to see what film the Finnish director will come up with next.
