Talk more about relationships and sex with your children. That’s the call from the National Association for Sexual Information (RFSU) after a new survey shows that only half of all parents do it.

Swedish young people want their parents to talk to them about sex, but still in many homes there is silence about the slightly embarrassing topic of conversation. This is a trend that RFSU wants to break.

– All open conversations that can be about things that feel intimate can strengthen the health of the children, but also the relationship with the parents, says Pelle Ullholm, sex informant at RFSU.

The survey carried out by Verian on behalf of RFSU shows that half of the parents questioned took the initiative to talk about sex and cohabitation with their children. Among those who have not taken the initiative, one in five is waiting for the children to bring up the subject themselves, and just under a third are unsure of how to do it.

– Don’t put it on the children, but take the initiative yourself, says Pelle Ullholm.

– Even if they don’t want to have that conversation right then and there, the children then know that if they want to talk to their parents, they can do so.

FACT This is how you can talk to your children about sex

Remember that it is you as a parent who takes the initiative.

Start from the questions you think your children have and what is relevant to that child.

Listen more than you talk. Open up a call and take it from there.

You have more chances than one as a parent. If the child doesn’t want to talk right now, there will probably come a day when he wants to.

Capture things that are close to your everyday life. Maybe a TV series opens up to having a conversation about living together.
