Taliban Ban MMA in Afghanistan

Having returned to power in Afghanistan in the summer of 2021, the Taliban announced on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the banning of mixed martial arts (MMA) in the country. The order was issued by the morality police, under the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. MMA is, according to its investigation, “problematic with regard to sharia law and that, in many aspects, it contradicts the teachings of Islam,” according to the statement sent to Agence France Presse, “which is why the decision was made to ban mixed martial arts in Afghanistan” despite its popularity. A sports authority official told local media that MMA was banned in part because it was considered too violent, likely to cause injury or even death.
