When does Ramadan start?
It is clear to Turkish Muslims: fasting starts on Saturday morning. Many Moroccan Muslims in the Netherlands join Saudi Arabia. This is based on the first day of the month that the new moon is visible. That’s tomorrow or Sunday. That will be announced on Friday evening.
The month of Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days and moves up for a few days every year. That is because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar instead of the Western solar calendar. There are 12 months, but they last shorter in the Islamic calendar, which means that Ramadan starts every year about eleven days earlier.
