Communist China has never governed Taiwan, a small archipelago with 24 million inhabitants, but claims to belong to it. Beijing has promised to get it back, by force if necessary. The tension still apparent, even more so against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, has risen a notch for several weeks. China carried out, on Monday, May 30, its second largest incursion of the year in the air defense zone of Taiwan with the entry, according to Taipei, of thirty planes including more than twenty fighters. These incursions are an example of “increasingly provocative rhetoric and activity” from China, according to Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State. A few days earlier, President Joe Biden had assured that Washington was ready to defend Taiwan militarily in the event of an invasion.
