Table tennis: Truls Möregårdh’s unlikely Olympic success – defeated world number one Wang Chuqin

Truls Möregårdh, 22, entered and surprised most with a huge game – and could hardly believe his eyes afterwards to the huge cheers of the crowd.

The meeting in the round of 16 developed into a real thriller where Truls Möregårdh celebrated big in the opening against the supreme Wang Chuqin.

  • He saved two set points in the first and showed his forehead to then take home the set to 12–10.

    Möregårdh was about to lose

In doing so, he caught Wang Chuqin off balance and also managed to take home the second set.

However, the Chinese worked his way into the match and he won the two subsequent sets where Möregårdh mixed and gave.

But the drama then continued in the other direction. The Swede finished by taking two straight sets and had to shout out his joy after advancing. The numbers were written as 4–2 (12–10, 11–7, 5–11,7–11, 11–9, 11–6).

Worth mentioning is that a photographer trampled the Chinese’s racket after Tuesday’s gold celebration in the mixed doubles final. The meeting with Möregårdh was thus carried out with a spare racket, according to TT.

    The resistance is clear

The Swedish 22-year-old faces Cheng-Jui Kao, Taiwan, in the round of 16. He is ranked 32nd in the world.

In the first round, Truls Möregårdh beat Belgian Cedric Nuytinck 4–0.
