Hundreds of Syrians have gathered for a demonstration at Sergels Torg in Stockholm on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the fall of the al-Assad regime.
Among the protesters is the flag used by the Islamist militia during last week’s offensive in Syria.
Ayman Alhameed has had his flag in his chest of drawers since he came to Sweden ten years ago. Now he dares to wrap it around him and go out and celebrate “like a proud Syrian” in his second homeland – Sweden, he says.
– We are here because it is our first day in freedom, without the al-Assad family. We have longed for this day for fourteen years and now we are finally free.
He thinks of friends and family he has lost and at the same time thanks Sweden for opening its doors “when we needed it”.
– The feeling cannot be described, says Ayman Alhameed.
