Syrian state media reports that five soldiers were killed in an Israeli strike near Damascus airport.

The data was confirmed by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which said two more people, said to be Iranian-backed fighters, were also killed.

Since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against the neighboring country, targeting government troops as well as allied Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters.

An Israeli attack in the countryside around the capital Damascus and south of coastal Tartus province killed three soldiers last month.

In June, Israeli airstrikes put Damascus airport out of service for almost two weeks.

In the past month, Israeli airstrikes have twice targeted Aleppo’s airport.

SOHR said at the time that these attacks had targeted weapons depots belonging to Iran-backed militias.
