A leader of the Islamist rebel movement, Commander Abd al-Ghani, confirms that opposition forces have captured the Syrian city of Homs, and calls the event “historic”.
The commander says the rebels have opened the gates to the city’s prison.
“Our forces have succeeded in freeing over 3,500 prisoners from the prison in Homs,” writes Hassan Abd al-Ghani on Telegram late on Saturday.
He added that rebel groups are “searching through different parts of the city” in an ongoing advance.
al-Ghani has previously assured that religious minorities in Syria should not be subjected to violence, AFP reports.
