It has rained significant amounts of water in Sydney, Australia and its surrounding areas. The area was last affected by floods in March.
Heavy rains have caused devastating floods in the state of New South Wales, which last experienced flooding in March.
The water level of rivers and dams has risen rapidly, so it is feared that the situation could worsen suddenly in Australia’s most populous state.
Rainfall is expected to continue until Tuesday.
New South Wales Minister for Disaster Services Stephanie Cooke warned on Sunday morning that the situation could progress quickly and therefore urged people to be ready to leave their homes at short notice.
Significant amounts of rain fell in some areas
In addition to Sydney, areas on the south coast, such as the Hunter Region and the Illawarra, have suffered the most from the floods.
In many areas, more than 200 millimeters of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. More than 350 millimeters of rain has fallen in the Illawarra region. The most rain fell in Brogers Creek, where 368 millimeters of rain was reported by Sunday morning.
The daily rainfall has in some places exceeded the July average.
In March, a state of emergency was declared in Australia due to floods.
At the time, 21 people died in the New South Wales region and more than 500,000 were evacuated.
