Swimming: Gold status for Sara Junevik in the EC: “I’ll take it for me”

The 24-year-old swimmer was clocked in 25.84 – a tenth off her personal best – and was 28 hundredths faster than Anna Ntountounaki of Greece who won her semi-final heat.

Junevik is chasing her first individual championship medal in long track, last year she took bronze over the distance in the short track EC.

But her main focus is not really the pursuit of gold in the 50 meter butterfly. That distance is not on the Olympic programme, but she is betting on qualifying for the 100 meter butterfly later in the week.

“50 meters just a bonus”

– 50 meters here is really just a bonus. My focus is entirely on the dog ring, she tells SVT.

In the final of the mixed medley team competition, Sweden finished sixth – but finished fourth after two washouts.

Both first-placed Poland and third-placed Greece were dished out for overshifts, and Israel took the gold.

The blue-and-yellow quartet Samuel Törnqvist, Erik Persson, Sara Junevik and Hanna Bergman had 3.49.93 and were just over a second behind Hungary in bronze.
