Van Rouwendaal has already won World Cup silver three times in the open water. In 2016 she became Olympic champion in the 10 kilometers in Rio de Janeiro, last year in Tokyo she finished second behind Cunha. In the run-up to the Games, she had extended her European titles in the 5 and 10 kilometers at the European Championships in Budapest.
