This is stated by the Armed Forces in a partial report to the government with assessments regarding Sweden’s future NATO membership.
It may also be relevant to contribute with combat aircraft for air patrols and with ground units to NATO’s reinforcement forces in the Baltics and Eastern Europe.
The Armed Forces’ preparations for Swedish NATO membership are led by Major General Thomas Nilsson.
“Swedish territory will also be of great importance for the alliance’s defense of Finland and the Baltic states,” he states on the Armed Forces’ website.
Swedish entry into NATO is also judged to change the conditions for NATO’s defense of Northern Norway, the control of sea connections in the North Sea and thus also the entrances to the Baltic Sea.
Swedish contributions to the defense alliance may therefore also include support for the grouping of allied combat forces, storage and the construction of supporting infrastructure for transport, basing, command and protection on Swedish soil.
“A natural contribution is to develop host country support and be able to be a base area for defense operations. Sweden is also interesting for grouping allied leadership capabilities,” says Thomas Nilsson.
