Swedish satellite to improve climate research

THREE NEWS YOU CAN’T MISS:

  • Swedish satellite to improve climate research

The Swedish Arctic Weather Satellite will provide more accurate weather forecasts and improve climate research.

The Swedish-made weather satellite was launched into space on 16 August.

By exploring moisture and temperature variations, as well as measuring ice crystals inside clouds, AWS will contribute new types of weather data in the Arctic and Antarctic.

It will move in a so-called polar orbit around the Earth and pass the Arctic and Antarctic. These are regions where we currently do not have sufficient access to weather data, because there are too few weather satellites in these areas.

    – The Arctic Weather Satellite will make one lap around the earth in an hour and a half, which means that it will orbit the poles several times a day. This means that it will not only produce completely new types of weather data, but also significantly more frequent data, says Johan Marcopoulos, communications manager at the Swedish Space Agency, in a press release.

AWS is a mission of the European Space Agency ESA.

  • Defense Minister Pål Jonson on Ukraine’s incursion into Russia

Ukrainian soldiers have occupied Russian land.

Sweden’s Minister of Defense Pål Jonson says in an interview in P1 Morgon that it may be that Ukraine wants to take territory for a possible later negotiation.

    – Ukraine has the right to defend itself inside and outside its territory. The reason for this is that it is Russia that has started this unprovoked.

The Defense Materials Agency (FMV) is to review the possibilities of simplifying the military support to the country.

    – Supporting Ukraine is an investment in our own security. If Russia were to win this terrible war, we would have significantly greater security problems than we have today.

The Nordic countries have entered into DCA agreements, a defense cooperation with the USA. Military weapons are more easily available in case of war, so they do not need to be transported from abroad.
