Sweden and Finland want to deepen their police cooperation.
In serious cases, the police must be able to work on the other side of the borders.
– With common muscles, we should be able to intervene much more resolutely on both sides of the border than before, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M).
Swedish-Finnish cooperation is to be strengthened on several levels. The government will hand over the new bill on police cooperation to Sweden’s Riksdag on Tuesday.
– In the border areas, Sweden and Finland must be able to work very integrated in our police authorities and also work in each other’s countries to prevent really serious crime such as murder or kidnapping or robbery, Gunnar Strömmer explains to TV4 Nyheterna.
– You must be able to follow criminals in car chases on the other side of the border and also be able to reinforce each other on both sides, in a different way than we can today. All this devoted to getting a joint force, to be able to use the full force of both the Swedish and Finnish police in an area close to the border, continues the Minister of Justice.
The goal is for the collaboration to begin with full force at the beginning of next year.
On Monday, the Swedish government and the Finnish government will hold a joint government meeting in Stockholm.
