The Swede was acquitted more than a year ago of the data breach charges, but the verdict was appealed. A court has now overturned the acquittal.
Data security expert Ola Bini was arrested at the airport in the capital Quito in April 2019, the same day that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was arrested in London.
The Swede, who is familiar with Assange, was accused, despite his denial, of data breaches and of being part of a “spy center” led by Assange. No further evidence has yet been presented.
Bini was released after some time in custody but was forbidden to leave the country. He had his assets frozen and was forced to report to the prosecutor’s office every week.
On January 31 last year, after almost four years, he was acquitted – but the sentence was appealed.
