Swedish NHL profile reveals when teammate Jaromir Jagr said the most unexpected thing on the ice: “He doesn’t even remember”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Andreas Johansson played 377 NHL games during his career.
Several of them together with legendary icon Jaromir Jagr.
Now the Swede reveals when he received the most unexpected advice from the Czech.

Everything took off in the parent club Hofors with his A-team debut in division 2 already as a 16-year-old in the 1987/88 season. After that, the forward’s career continued to the big club Färjestad Andreas Johansson.

Johansson in the NHL

It would be five seasons in the top flight before an even bigger adventure awaited. In 1995, the Swede moved across the Atlantic and got the chance in the world’s best hockey league, the NHL.

First stop was the New York Islanders, but he would only stay there for a year before the move to Pittsburgh fell through. Then Johansson would become teammates with two of the hockey world’s biggest icons, namely Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.
– I was traded at the end of November 1996 from the Islanders to the Penguins. Then there was a match the very next day and then I got to play in the same chain as Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. It was scary, he says as a guest on the TV show “Hockeymorgon”, see below.
– I stayed in that chain for a while until I hurt myself, broke some ribs away against Toronto and then “Stu” Barnes came in and scored like 37 goals. Then you never saw that chain again, haha.

The advice from Jagr

There would be a total of 377 NHL games and 170 points for Andreas Johansson, who played for seven different NHL teams. After the Islanders and Penguins, it was the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Nashville Predators for the Swedish migratory bird.

But the time in Pittsburgh was most memorable and above all the time together as a teammate with Jagr in particular. The 49-year-old remembers in particular how he was forced to ask the Czech for tactical advice and received the most unexpected answer from the icon.
– Pittsburgh was ruled by the players at that time, not by the coach. The coach didn’t say anything to me about what I should do, so in the warm-up I went up to Jagr and asked: “I’m going to play center, what’s my role?” Johansson says in the TV interview, see it below.
– Then he said: “When they have the puck, you take it back and then when you have the puck, send it to the right or left and then go towards the goal”. This is absolutely true! I have spoken to Jaromir about this several times afterwards and he does not remember saying it. But he actually did. And it went pretty well anyway.
