Elias Pettersson injects points into the Vancouver Canucks.
At the same time, the Swede’s contract with the club is coming to an end.
– I think it is the right club for his development, says Mattias Norström to Hockey Sweden.
Mattias Norström is one of the most experienced Swedish defenders to have played in the NHL, with almost 900 NHL games on his CV. The Stockholmer was also involved and won a WC gold (1998) and two WC silver with Tre Kronor (1997 and 2003).
Paying homage to Vancouver
Norström began his professional career in AIK, before being drafted by the New York Rangers. After three seasons in the Rangers, with games in both the NHL and AHL, the Swede went to the Los Angeles Kings. There he remained for eleven seasons, the last six of which as captain. Norström played his last games in the Dallas Stars.

After his fine career, today 51-year-old Norström has become an expert in Viaplay’s hockey broadcasts, mainly NHL. One team he followed in that role is the Vancouver Canucks, who surprised many in a positive way this season. In the team we find, among other things, the Swedish star Elias Pettersson.
– Vancouver has had good timing this season with two players who bounced back to what they knew they could deliver – JT Miller and Brock Boeser. Then Elias is the absolute top in Vancouver. With Hughes, you have this catalyst on the blue line, so Vancouver becomes dangerous going forward. Although I thought Vancouver underperformed last season, I didn’t think they would do this well this year, says Norström to Hockeysverige.
Pettersson’s future
Elias Pettersson has scored points for a Canadian club this season. The former Timrå and Växjö player has a total of 32 points (10 goals and 22 assists), which makes him the best scorer among NHL Swedes. After the season, Pettersson’s contract with Vancouver expires and it is still unclear where the 25-year-old will play next season.
– I think Vancouver is the right club for his development. You also have to take into account which other club can afford Elias if his contract expires. I can see lots of clubs who can see him as a dream player, but the question is whether they can afford him, says Norström about Pettersson’s situation.

Norström makes a club proposal for Pettersson, which had resulted in the formation of a very interesting duo.
– Maybe it would be the Chicago Blackhawks because Connor Bedard don’t have a playmate there. If we look around a little we have had Yevgeny Malkin and Sydney Crosby. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Bäckström, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko The rantan… That’s what clubs are looking for.
– Elias is ranked number one in Vancouver and then you build the team around him, but I still say Chicago. Elias and Bedard would be something, says Norström to the hockey site.
