Swedish Nelly sues Shein for image theft

In September 2024, the Swedish clothing company Nelly was noticed by customers that photos of the company’s clothes were used by Chinese fashion giant Shein.

Now Nelly has sued the company for copyright infringement and they are not alone. Both H&M and Uniqlo are in litigation with the company on copyright infringement or plagiarism.

Shein writes in a statement to the cultural news that the company that, in principle, does not comment on ongoing legal processes, but that the photos have been picked down.

“We do not accept the description of this case and intend to defend us. The photos in question were removed as soon as Shein was warned. According to our company policy, we do not comment on details in ongoing legal cases. Shein takes all requirements for copyright infringement seriously,” the company writes.

On Monday, March 24, a first meeting will be held, an oral preparation, between the parties in the Patent and Market Court in Stockholm.

Hear Nelly’s CEO Helena Karllinders-Östlundh tell us about the case in the clip.
