Swedish should be the main language in primary school, says S leader Magdalena Andersson.
Schools with an English focus must be forced to have at least 75 percent Swedish teaching.
During the politicians’ week, the Social Democrats come forward with a proposal to raise the minimum requirement for the proportion of teaching that must be in Swedish in preschools and in grades one to nine.
Today, it is required that primary schools that have an exception for teaching in English hold half of the teaching in Swedish.
That requirement should increase to at least 75 percent, says S-leader Magdalena Andersson and the party’s education policy spokesperson Åsa Westlund at a press conference during the politicians’ week in Visby.
The national minority languages must be protected, according to S, and are not covered by the proposal.
S also wants to remove an exception that English schools do not have to hire qualified teachers. Today, these schools can indefinitely hire foreign teachers who lack Swedish teaching credentials, which is unreasonable, according to Westlund.
S also wants to introduce a requirement for the use of Swedish when grading and exercising authority in primary schools with a Swedish curriculum.
