According to Sweden’s NATO negotiator, the situation must calm down before negotiations can continue.
Sweden decided together with Turkey to put the negotiations between the countries on hold on the ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership, says the Swedish public broadcasting company Sveriges Radio (you switch to another service).
Sweden’s NATO negotiator Oscar Stenström told about the decision in an interview with SR’s Godmorgon världen program.
According to Stenström, Sweden and Turkey decided to suspend the negotiations for the time being, because in the current situation there was a danger that the situation would become even more difficult.
He referred to the Koran burning incident in Stockholm and the reactions it caused abroad. Stenström believes that the situation needs to calm down before negotiations can continue.
– It doesn’t make sense to discuss confidentially and meet physically, because it could mess up the situation even more, Stenström estimates.
Stenström said in an interview that despite the current situation, he hopes that the Swedish and Turkish negotiators could be in contact with each other next week.
