According to Svenska kraftnät, the electric cables that the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 made an unexpected deceleration over “vital Swedish infrastructure”.
Following the information that the ship was moving suspiciously in the Kattegatt, Svenska kraftnät has now started an investigation.
“We are now conducting an investigation and looking at the cable from a maintenance perspective,” writes Tobias Östberg, press secretary at Svenska kraftnät.
The cables, Konti-Skan 1 and 2, run between Läsö in northeastern Denmark and Kungsbacka on the Swedish west coast. It was here that Yi Peng 3, already ten days before it was connected to the cable breaks in the Baltic Sea, made a strange deceleration – right over the cables. TV4 Nyheterna and Danish TV2 later found a trace on the bottom that several experts could not explain.
No disturbance has been noticed on the cables, which, according to TV4 Nyhetern’s information, are buried, but their owner, state-owned Svenska kraftnät, still wants to investigate whether something may have happened.
In an email to TV4 Nyheterna, Svenska kraftnät writes that they are declining an interview for the time being, but that they have started an investigation that includes, among other things, an inspection. The cables describe them as “vital infrastructure”.
“Our cable in Kattegatt is working exactly as usual, but this is vital infrastructure and due to that and recent events, we are now conducting an investigation and looking at the cable from a maintenance perspective. We’re not ready, but we’ll be happy to get back to you when we are,” writes Tobias Östberg, press secretary at Svenska kraftnät.
After publication, Svenska Kraftnät announced that the investigation has been completed without being able to demonstrate any impact.
