EU diplomat Johan Floderus has been detained for more than 630 days.

The trial resumed on Sunday.

“Johan Floderus is arbitrarily deprived of his liberty in Iran and he must be released immediately to be able to return to his relatives,” writes the Foreign Ministry’s press service in an email.

On Sunday, the trial against Johan Floderus resumed in Tehran. Still with accusations of espionage.

According to Iranian state-controlled media, he must have been interrogated about alleged contacts with the Swedish Ministry of Defense, his email and trips to Iran, writes Iran International English on X.

Swedish embassy staff were also present in court.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the trial was held on Sunday and that staff were present. In an email to Aftonbladet, they write that they do not know when the next court hearing can be held.

“The trial resumed today, Sunday. Sweden’s chargé d’affairs was allowed to be present in the courtroom only during parts of the trial. The embassy is in close contact with Johan Floderu’s lawyer. The Foreign Ministry and the embassy lack information about when the next trial hearing will take place,” writes the Foreign Ministry’s press service.

Arrested in April 2022

It was in the middle of April 2022 that the Swedish EU diplomat Johan Floderus was captured while on holiday in Iran. Through quiet diplomacy they tried to get him released but without success. He is being held in custody on charges of espionage and the case has received a lot of international attention.

A former cellmate has told the parents how he felt in Evin Prison. The light is on in the cell around the clock. The prisoners sleep with blindfolds and neither beds nor bunks are available.

Johan has had the opportunity to call his loved ones from prison on a couple of occasions. Several times he has been forced to go on hunger strike for the opportunity to call them and the calls take place under strict supervision.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes that they are working hard to get him released.

“Johan Floderus is arbitrarily detained in Iran and he must be released immediately to be able to return to his relatives”.

“The government and the Swedish embassy in Tehran are working very intensively to get Johan Floderus free. Our work continues with undiminished strength and we will not give up our efforts until Johan Floderus has been released and returned home”.
