Since 2005, Sweden has its own rules for cider. They note, among other things, that the alcohol content must never exceed 8.5 percent and that the drink can be both quiet and sparkling.
“The cider must contain at least 15 percent yeast or uneven juice from apple or pear. Cider can be flavored with other fruit or carrier but the foundation is always juice from apple or pear,” writes Kivik’s museum on his website.
The proposal: Raise the requirements of cider
At EU level, on the other hand, there are no strict or common rules-and a new proposal wants to change.
Now a standardized definition of cider is suggested: the drink must contain at least 50 percent fruit juice, otherwise it must be called something else, which Today’s industry Be the first to rewrite.
The proposal would affect several of the largest cider manufacturers in Sweden, as our current rules do not require the finished product to contain more than 15 percent fruit juice.

The Swedish cider classics Briska and record are two of the brands whose drinks had to change recipes or change their names if the new EU proposal is voted on.
– If everything called Cider should have a juice content of 50 percent, we will not be able to call our products for cider anymore, but then we may call them something else, says Henrik DungeCEO of Åbro Brewery, which manufactures record cider, for DI. He believes that such a high fruit would make the drink almost undrinkable.
Richard Bengtssonchief brewer at Spendrups, agrees – according to him, the proposal is a disaster: is raging against the new rules.
– It would mean death for the sweetened cider called “Swedish cider”, he tells DI.

In the spring of 2024, the European Commission voted in the so-called “breakfast directives”, which, among other things, suggested that the requirement for the amount of fruit and berries in jam should be raised.
As in the case of Cider, the players who failed to live up to the new boundaries would be faced with two options: change their recipes or change the name of the product.
