A Swedish-Belarusian woman in her 60s has been detained in Belarus since she was arrested during a trip to Minsk last spring.
According to Expressen, she has now been sentenced to a five-year sentence in the dictatorship.
Dmitri Vasserman at the Belarusian embassy in Sweden tells Expressen that it is unclear whether the woman has been sentenced to prison, a five-year penal colony or a five-year strict penal colony.
– What she was sentenced for has not been made public, but the human rights organizations believe that it may be about donations to Belarusian volunteers who fight for Ukraine. According to them, there are several others who have been sentenced for the donations with the same criminal classification, says Dmitri Vasserman to the newspaper.
The woman is said to have been involved in an initiative of the Belarusian diaspora that does not support the dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms to TT that a Swedish citizen from Svealand is detained in Belarus.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is acting in the matter together with the embassy in Minsk. The embassy is in contact with Belarusian authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with relatives in Sweden.”
