In 2022, an average of 17 plastic carrier bags were used per person in Sweden. It is a small increase since 2021 when that number was 14 plastic bags, according to statistics from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
At the same time, 83 plastic bags were used per person in 2017 and the annual consumption has thus decreased by 66 plastic bags since then. The Environmental Protection Agency notes that the plastic bag tax introduced in 2020 has had a major impact on how many plastic bags Swedes buy.
Within the EU, the goal is to reduce consumption to no more than 40 plastic bags per person per year by 2025. The Swedes are thus achieving the goal by a good margin at the moment.
