CAN has been investigating alcohol habits in the same way since 2019. Since then, total alcohol consumption has decreased by 6 percent.
Last year, each Swedish from 15 years consumed an average of 8.4 liters of pure alcohol, compared with just over 8.6 liters the year before.
“The lower consumption is partly due to a decrease in the Internet trading that takes place alongside Systembolaget, but also the purchase of smuggled alcohol fell,” says Björn Trolldal, investigator and researcher at CAN in a press release.
Alcohol consumption is divided into two categories. Registered alcohol includes alcohol from Systembolaget and restaurants, and unregistered alcohol are, among other things, beverages purchased abroad, online or the purchase of smuggling liquor.
Consumption of unregistered alcohol decreases
The unregistered alcohol, which accounts for a significantly smaller proportion, is also the category where the decrease is greatest.
In 2024, consumption decreased by 13 percent compared to the previous year and since 2019 it has decreased by 43 percent.
When it comes to the type of alcoholic beverage that Swedes consume, no major changes are visible over time.
Last year, wine accounted for 43 percent of alcohol consumption, followed by strong beer and spirits, which was 33 percent and 18 percent respectively.
