Sweden’s oldest life prisoner dead – aged 94

Life sentence double murderer Helmer Ljus from Delsbo has died in Salbergaanstalten, reports The Express.
He lived to be 95 years old.
– He has a completely indescribable background. If too many people were like him, everything functioning would cease, said GW Persson.

In 1988, Helmer Ljus from Delsbo was sentenced to eleven years in prison after ax murdering and pouring caustic acid on an acquaintance.

In 1994 he was released – and five years later, in 1999, he murdered again. This time his disabled neighbor in Ljusdal. He was sentenced to life in prison – aged 71.

– He simply didn’t like him, said Leif GW Persson last spring when Ljus received his time-limited sentence.

GW on Sweden’s oldest life prisoner: “Stökpelle in general”

GW: “A rascal”

Helmer Ljus was born in 1928 and was only 19 years old when he was convicted of his first crime. Over the years, he has been convicted of everything from poaching and illegal transfer of power to assault, the newspaper writes.

– He has lived his whole life as a home arsonist, poacher and regular thief. A rascal in general.

It was at the age of 60 that he was convicted of murder for the first time.

The life sentence was commuted

– He has a completely indescribable background. He has lived his whole life in this 19th-century criminality, said GW Persson.

Over the past 15 years, Ljus has repeatedly applied for clemency or a suspended sentence. But in March this year, his life sentence was commuted to 39 years in prison.

Helmer Ljus would have become a free man in 2025.
