Sweden’s nightmare in the World Cup semi-finals – losing after incredible drama in the final minutes

Sweden misses out on the WC final.
After Spain settled late with a real cold shower.
Now awaits the bronze medal match for the Swedish women’s national team.

The World Cup semi-final between Sweden and Spain was for a long time a war of positions and a huge battle on the pitch. The first half was goalless and it would take a very long time before the first goal of the match came, but then there was incredible drama in the final minutes.

Spain’s goal

Sweden had some good chances, but it was mainly Spain that came closest to a lead on Tuesday morning. The Spaniards were also the more capable team that controlled the game, while Blågult had difficulty getting longer attacks.

The clash looked set to go to extra time but with around ten minutes left in the match, Spain struck through the substitute Salma Paralluelo. Enormous cheers erupted for the Spaniards and it was a real cold shower for the Swedes.

Sweden counters

But there was still time left and shortly after came the all-important equaliser. This time too, it was a entrant in the form of Rebecca Blomqvist who arranged the Swedish equalization to 1-1 through a real class goal.

However, the joy would be extremely short-lived as Spain came with another cold shower at the end. Just a minute or so after the equalizing goal, the fullback got Olga the ball outside the penalty area and pulled distinctly over the crossbar to make it 2-1.

Missing the WC final

Another huge Spanish cheer took place on the grass and a very heavy conceded goal Sweden. Despite seven minutes of added time, Sweden failed to catch up once more and suffered their first loss of the tournament 1-2.

Thus, Sweden misses out on the coveted World Cup final and must now gather before the bronze medal match that awaits on Saturday.
