In Sweden, there are several large grocery store chains, such as Ica and Coop. But which chain is the biggest?

In a mapping from Grocery news revealed which self-owned grocery stores had the most sales in 2023 and the top ten are listed here.

Cross-border trade challenges the top

During the past year, the cross-border retail stores outside Strömstad have returned to peak turnover. This after a large loss in the aftermath of the corona pandemic, which caused the buyers to disappear when Norway was forced to close the border.

– Cross-border trade has received a new boost and is also benefiting from the lower Swedish prices for fuel. It has become another incentive for Norwegians to go to Sweden to buy groceries, says HUI’s grocery expert Per Andersson to the newspaper.

But which own-owned grocery stores are actually the biggest in Sweden? Here are the ten largest grocery stores in order of size:

  • Ica Maxi, Haninge, net turnover SEK 1,145,963,000.
  • Nordby, Supermarket Strömstad, net turnover SEK 1,018,432,000.
  • Ica Maxi, Jönköping, net turnover SEK 1,004,830,000.
  • Ica Maxi Hälla, Västerås, net turnover SEK 926,601,000.
  • Maximat, Nordby, net turnover SEK 892,870,000.
  • Ica Maxi Högsbo, Gothenburg, net turnover SEK 884,058,000.
  • Ica Maxa, Sollentuna, net turnover SEK 864,809,000.
  • Ica Maxi, Linköping, net turnover SEK 838,275,000.
  • Ica Maxi, Nacka, net turnover SEK 824,789,000.
  • Ica Maxi, Borås, net turnover SEK 781,678,000.

    • The list is largely dominated by Ica Maxi stores. The leading store Ica Maxi in Haninge passed one billion kroner in net sales already in 2020 and is firmly holding the lead.

    – Basically, it’s about the fact that we have built up strong customer trust over a long period of time. A store does not manage to turn over this much without a good relationship between customers and employees. The customers probably feel that we do what we can in terms of price. It is also logical that Ica Maxi does well when there is such a focus on price. We are good at changing operations regardless of whether it concerns a pandemic, inflation or other crises, says the Ica Maxi dealer Michael Gadd to Daily goods news.

    Why aren’t Hemköp or Willys on the list?

    On the list, the giants Coop, Hemköp and Willys are conspicuous by their absence. This is because they do not report sales at store level for self-owned stores.

    But Coop-owned Grensemat’s Nordby Supermarket and Maximat Nordby stores are on the list in place two and five, respectively.

    And Per Andersson is not surprised, he believes that the cross-border stores Nordby Supermarket and Maximat Nordby may challenge leader Ica Maxi in Haninge in the future.
