The Swedish national team wins European Championship gold in table tennis – for the first time in 21 years.
Truls Möregårdh, 21, became a big hero in the decisive match against German veteran Timo Boll.
– It is the best day of my life, he says SVT.
On Sunday evening, the final of the team EC in table tennis was decided in Malmö, when Sweden was pitted against Germany.
It was Möregårdh who started the final against Benedikt Duda, whom he crushed 3-0 in the set, before Germany equalized through Boll against Falck. Then Kristian Karlsson gave Sweden the golden chance after beating Kay Stumper.
In the fourth match, Truls Möregårdh became a great hero when he defeated the 42-year-old superstar Timo Boll 3-2 in sets – which means that Sweden wins gold after a total of 3-1 in matches.
Historic success
Truls Möregårdh, Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson thus become historic. The success means the first Swedish team gold in the EC in 21 years.
– It feels so unreal. It feels completely crazy. I am completely moved. This is what you work for every day, says Möregårdh in SVT’s broadcast.
– It’s indescribable, it’s a goal we’ve had for a long time, says Kristian Karlsson.
The last time Sweden won team gold was in 2002, then with Jan-Ove Waldner in the lead – and also then with German Timo Boll in the opposing team.
