The US Senate voted on Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership last night. The memberships were ratified by a vote of 95–1.

Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson tweeted his thanks after the vote.

– Strong, mutual support and a quick vote in favor of our countries joining the union are greatly appreciated.

Also the Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde was happy with the Senate vote.

– The United States is the largest and most important country in NATO, so of course it plays a big role. It shows confidence in both Sweden and Finland, Linde told news agency TT.

Linde was particularly pleased that the NATO membership application of Sweden and Finland has progressed so quickly.

– Now there are only seven countries left that have not ratified. The process has never gone so fast.

Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership has now been ratified in 23 countries. Ratification is still missing from Portugal, the Czech Republic, Greece, Slovakia, Spain, Hungary and Turkey.
