Mexico, ranked 19th in the world, took early control of the match and won the first set 25–20. After that, the Mexican dominance continued, and when they also won the second set (25–19), the situation looked bleak for 28th-ranked Sweden, despite even sets.
But Sweden came back, taking the third set 25–20, the second 25–22, and forcing a fifth and deciding set.
Once there, Sweden showed coolness and class and won 15–5.
With the victory, the semi-final against either Colombia or Kenya awaits – a match to be decided later this evening.
Later this summer, on August 18, the EC finals in Düsseldorf, Germany also get under way. There, Sweden will be pitted against Turkey, Greece, Germany, Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic in the group stage.
