Sweden sends support packages to earthquake-stricken Turkey

Powerful earthquakes have shaken southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. So far, more than 2,300 people have been found dead, AP reports.

On Monday afternoon, a press conference will be held regarding Sweden’s support for Turkey and Syria. Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defence, Johan Forssell, Minister for Aid and Foreign Trade, and Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Director General of the Agency for Community Protection and Preparedness will participate in the press conference.

– At short notice, Sweden can, among other things, offer support to the affected population, including tents and temporary emergency accommodation, says Bohlin.

Sweden will also give seven million kroner in humanitarian aid to the international Federation of the Red Cross, in support of the humanitarian situation in Turkey and Syria, the government announces.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) sent his condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Kristersson writes on Twitter: “Our thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. As a partner to Turkey and EU presidency, we stand ready to offer our support,” continues the prime minister.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently has no information on injured or deceased Swedes.
