The Swedish government has decided to assign three naval vessels and one air force aircraft to the new NATO-led Baltic Sea surveillance operation.

The purpose of the operation is to protect submarine cables from vandalism.

Foreign minister Elina Valtonen (co.) told on Friday that NATO is sending two ships to monitor the cable. The Swedish ships have not yet left for surveillance missions.

No deadline has been set for the participation of Swedish ships, but it is decided by the management of the NATO control operation.

The Folk och försvar conference focused on security and defense policy started in Sweden on Sunday and will continue until Tuesday.

The special theme of the conference this year is “leadership and governance to build resilience”.
