So far, the Swedish government has sent seven million kroner to Turkey and two million kroner to Syria as humanitarian aid.
— We chose to do it immediately, without having to have a government decision. Then it would have taken longer. So we prioritized getting the humanitarian aid out as quickly as possible: seven million to Turkey and two million to Syria, says Forssell.
He reminds that Sweden also contributes support via the UN and the Red Cross’ aid efforts.
— We are now following this situation very closely. We are in close contact with the Turkish authorities and aid organizations, to get a picture of what is needed. We are ready to convene the government at very short notice if necessary to make new decisions linked to the humanitarian situation, says Forssell.
— Everyone realizes that seven million kroner is an important start, but it will not be enough. More will be required here, he adds.
According to Forssell, grants are in place to contribute to disaster situations such as the one currently prevailing in the affected countries.
— It is clear that we have set aside money for this type of event, which you do not want to happen – but if it happens, there is money allocated for it. We will return in the near future, is our hope.
