Sweden makes family reunification difficult | News in brief

In Sweden, family reunification may require a DNA test in the future.

On Tuesday, the Swedish government decided to tighten the conditions related to family reunification. The goal of the tightening is to reduce immigration and crime.

– The range of family members entitled to a residence permit must be reviewed and tightened, said a member of the Swedish Diet Ludvig Apling.

In the future, eligibility may be affected by DNA and income.

The Swedish authorities are still considering the introduction of DNA tests. The tests would make it easier to confirm kinship. A DNA test would make identification easier, for example, when it is difficult to verify a child’s identity.

– The right to family life is a basic right, but our current rules are more generous than European requirements, commented the Minister of Immigration and Asylum Maria Malmer Stenergard.

In Sweden, the current legislation has begun to be reviewed, and the final results will be published in January 2025.
