Sweden has been invited to a European port cooperation with six other countries. One purpose is to counter drug smuggling.
– For a long time, the countries have formed a kind of inner circle in the work against organized crime, says Gunnar Strömmer (M), Minister of Justice.
Sweden has asked to participate and has now received an invitation.
The coalition against organized crime – as the collaboration calls itself – is a deepened collaboration between the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The purpose is mainly to counter crime and drug smuggling via ports.
According to Gunnar Strömmer, Sweden’s entry makes it easier for prosecutors, customs and ports to share information with their European colleagues.
– We have a geographical proximity to each other and we see that the drug traffic that comes to Sweden to a large extent takes place in connection with these countries. Now we can tie our authorities closer together, he says.
The cooperation between the countries takes place in parallel with the cooperation that is already underway at EU level.
