Sweden can be a member of NATO as early as

Researcher Henri Vanhanen from the Foreign Policy Institute believes that Turkey’s nagging about Sweden’s membership was no longer in anyone’s interests.

Researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute Henri Vanhanen anticipates that Sweden may be a member of NATO as early as November, if the process proceeds in the same way as in the case of Finland.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that he had submitted Sweden’s NATO application for parliament’s ratification. However, there is still no definite information on what schedule the parliament will deal with the ratification.

According to Vanhanen, it seems that teasing Turkey was no longer in anyone’s interest. One of the reasons for the progress of Sweden’s membership right now may have been the American fighter jets, which Turkey has negotiated with the United States to buy. Until the public, information about the discussions has not been leaked.

Vanhanen considers the increased threat of terrorism in Sweden to be another significant issue, which, according to Vanhanen, is to some extent a result of Sweden’s NATO process.

– Sweden was targeted by Muslim countries, says Vanhanen.

– This is partly Turkey’s fault, because Turkey has been cultivating the perception of Sweden as a hotbed of terrorism and has prolonged the process. It has openly exposed Koran burnings in the state media. That could also have had an effect in the background here, he continues.
