On Friday, February 24, it will be one year since the war in Ukraine broke out. Since the outbreak of war, not only soldiers have been killed and injured, but also civilians and aid workers. The Swedish combat medic Niels Erixon went down to Ukraine in the spring of 2022 to help on the front lines.
Niels ended up in the front-line town of Bachmut, which has been described as hell on earth and likened to a human meat grinder where soldiers are killed on an assembly line.
After tending to the dead and wounded, he himself was so injured by Russian artillery that he himself had to go home in a wheelchair, paralyzed.
– The Russians are terrorists. Soldiers don’t kill, loot and rape, he tells Efter fem’s reporter Nick Strömgren.
